"You can’t always get what you want.” That was the line my Mom would sing—half-playful—on the rare occasions when she told the grandchildren “no.”
It became a kind of signature moment, a gentle way of setting boundaries with love. And if you knew her, you know how rare those “nos” were—because her heart was open, and she rarely said no to anyone.
Today, we gather to honor the life of Eileen LaCanne—a mother, sister, wife, a treasured friend—but to me, she was simply my Mom. And she was everything a person could ever hope for in a mother.
She created a home that was safe, warm, and filled with love. With my Dad, Ron LaCanne, by her side, she built a life rooted in family. Together, they created a place where everyone felt welcome. Friends came and stayed. Birthdays were celebrated. Sleepovers were frequent. Chris and I were lucky to grow up in that kind of home—a place full of laughter, care, and the quiet strength that comes from two people doing their best for their family.
